In February 2015 the Prime Minister launched his Challenge on Dementia 2020, which set out to build on the achievements of the Prime Minister’s Challenge on Dementia 2012-2015.
The Implementation Plan published on 6th March 2016 outlines how the 50 commitments set out in the Prime Minister’s challenge on dementia 2020 will be met, ensuring that England becomes the world-leader in dementia care, research and awareness by 2020.
For the last 4 years, Govconnect’s Dementia 2020 series of conferences ('16, '17, '18, '19) have allowed government departments, arms-length bodies, the NHS and local authorities, research institutions, and the charity and voluntary sector to hear from senior leaders from many of the key partner organisations involved in the 2020 Challenge.
The Govconnect 2020 series to date has welcomed 1000+ delegates & 70+ speakers, providing the platform to discuss actions up to 2020 and hear more detailed delivery plans for them. Each year bursaries have been provided for carers and service users to attend, so as their views can be incorporated into the days discussions, in the hope they will contribute significantly to future policy and direction.
The COVID-19 pandemic has put some health systems under immense pressure and stretched others beyond their capacity. As such, responding to this public health emergency and successfully minimising its impact requires every health resource to be leveraged. The Dementia 2020 challenge: 2018 review phase 1 summarises and sets out revised actions for 2018 to 2020. As part of the 2018 Review, stakeholders and national partners were asked to identify actions to help meet the commitments outlined in the Challenge by 2020. Policy development during the COVID-19 pandemic has been a patchwork, and commitments by 2020 set out in the 2018 review may now lie unfulfilled. The health and care system faces significant challenges to restoring services, not only in hospitals, but also in social care, primary care, mental health and community-based services.
Govconnect would like to encourage previous delegates, speakers and partners to join us for Dementia 2020 - The Final Review - the last instalment in this hugely successful series of conferences, will provide a forward look to the potential next stage of the Challenge, beyond 2020 and post Covid-19. The conference will welcome back some of the highest profile contributors from previous years to form the most senior speaker line-up ever assembled.
